Hearing Loss Crosses All Boundaries, Including Age, Background, Race, And Economics

What causes hearing loss? It can result from the cumulative effects of genetics, loud noise exposure, medications, trauma, and yes, aging. One-third of people over the age of 65 have a treatable hearing loss, while that number jumps to two-thirds of people over the age of 70. It is often hard to pinpoint exactly what caused a hearing loss, but there are many proactive ways that you can protect your hearing as much as possible.

The most common and preventable cause of hearing loss is loud noise exposure. It comes as no surprise to most that concerts and loud music played through earbuds can cause hearing damage, but there are many sounds that get overlooked.

Any time that a tool such as an electric saw, drill, or hammer is being used, earplugs or earmuffs should absolutely be worn. The same goes for operation of lawnmowers, heavy duty equipment and certainly any firearms.

If a hearing loss has already been discovered, the next best way to protect your hearing is to consider treatment with hearing aids. While they cannot keep you from technically losing more hearing, they keep the nerves inside your ears stimulated by sending signals to your brain. The earlier a hearing loss is treated with hearing aids, the better the long-term results in making speech clear and crisp and it helps to keep background noise where it belongs- in the background.

Fun Facts About Hearing

  • A dog’s attention level can be determined by noticing their ears. Ears forward mean engaged. Pulled back ears means friendly.
  • Your ears don’t stop hearing when you sleep; your brain chooses to ignore the sound.
  •  You do not need to clean the wax out of your ears unless you have an abnormal condition. Ears push the excess wax out as needed.
  • Sound travels at the speed of 1,130 feet per second.
  • A newborn baby’s entire hearing apparatus is slightly immature but responds best to high-pitched voices.
  • The number one cause of hearing loss is exposure to excessively loud sounds (85 decibels or higher).

  1. Dr. Eileen Clark has been treating me for hearing that began when I was a teenager, about 55 years ago. First, she listened carefully as I told her my hearing history . Then she measured my hearing using a sound-proof booth. She worked up a treatment plan and part of that plan was hearing aids. She had a number of types, styles, sensitivities and manufacturers from which to choose. She explained the types of hearing aids she felt would best serve my needs and explained why others wouldn’t work well for me. She didn’t try to steer me toward a particular type or brand; just gave me the facts and let me make the decision. Her explanations were so detailed that I felt very comfortable choosing my new hearing aids. She explained how I would be able to get maximum service, what to expect and how much time would be needed for me to get adjusted to this new experience. She instructed me how to take care of my hearing aids, what could damage them and what would not damage them, how to clean them and a secret way to tell which hearing aid is right and which is left (works every time). She even told me about battery life! Maggie at the front desk worked to get the best appointment times for me. I never felt rushed, manipulated or shorted. My appointments have been super experiences and I highly recommend this practice.

    1. Your message is so appreciated. We feel lucky to have Eileen and Maggie on the team and are thrilled that you are so satisfied. Thank you for sharing!
