How to Speak to Loved Ones With Hearing LossBy Kristen Grosso, BHK
Just as it takes two to tango, it takes two to communicate. Communication is the foundation of human connection and interaction, especially for individuals with hearing loss. It becomes more vital to employ effective strategies to foster understanding and engagement.
Communication is made up of the speaker and the listener. I believe it is important to highlight that the listener is not the only individual responsible for communicating.
As someone who is speaking to a loved one with hearing loss it is important to keep in mind that shouting is not the solution. Speaking clearly without exaggerated mouth movements will allow the listener to be attentive to what is being said. The speaker should also refrain from using unnecessary jargon or complex languages to make it easier on the listener.
To that regard it is important that the speaker and listener are face to face in order for the listener to utilize visual cues such as lip reading, and facial expressions. They should be positioned in a well lit area, allowing for the face to be more visible. This not only helps with lip reading but promotes a more immersive and connected conversation. It is encouraged to create spaces that optimize visual communication cues. If the speaker is speaking away from the listener, the listener should be confident to grab the attention of the speaker, politely (and vice versa) and ask them to face them while speaking in order to refrain from saying “huh” or “what”.
Creating a supportive environment involves everyone playing a role in ensuring that those with hearing loss feel valued and understood. Encourage active listening, PATIENCE and empathy among all participants in a conversation. This collective effort contributes to an atmosphere where communication barriers are minimized.
The significance of fostering a supportive communication domain in various social circles, workplaces and educational settings. By doing so, we can pursue surroundings where those with hearing loss can thrive and contribute fully to their communities without the worry of feeling isolated, or left out.
Effective communication with individuals experiencing hearing loss involves a combination of clear speech, face to face interaction, and a supportive environment. By adopting and promoting these strategies, we not only enhance the daily experience of those with hearing loss but contribute to a more inclusive and understanding society.
